Exclusive: Bollywood's independent Women!

Bollywood's women often walk the tight-rope between being radical and being outright conservative when it comes to a question of their career after marriage.

Here is a look at the career path of some leading Bollywood ladies, post-marriage.

Starting from Suzanne Khan Roshan who had reportedly walked out on her husband Hrithik Roshan on hearing about his alleged infidelity with co-star Barbara Mori.

Suzanne, who is an established interior decorator has successfully kept her career far away from Hrithik's and managed completely independently, and will always be financially independent.

On the list of independent women, Shah Rukh's wife Gauri Khan will definitely feature.

While she started out as a homemaker, and someone who lives completely in her superstar husband's shadow, in the recent years, Gauri has come into her own.

She took over as one of the key producers of Red Chillies Entertainment, and she gives the venture as much time as any business woman would.

Gauri's status as a celebrity of her own standing was first acknowledged by Vogue magazine when they put her on their cover, not as SRK's wife, but as an emerging presence in Bollywood.

Before we discuss those women who occupy the other end of the spectrum and gave up their careers soon after marriage, there is one person who falls somewhere in between.

Twinkle Khanna.

Twinkle's Bollywood career had already been on shaky grounds before she married Akshay Kumar in 2001.

However, since she stopped acting the very same year, her marriage is considered to be the reason for her Bollywood halt.

It is interesting to notice that she has been a successful interior designer for years now, and has done up the houses of her star friends

Moving on to those actresses who decided to give up their throbbing careers because they got married or because they had children.

On the forefront of this brigade is Kajol.

After winning more than four Filmfare Awards, Kajol gave up her career for a long stretch a little before her daughter Nyasa was born.

It is also rumoured that hubby Ajay Devgan asked her not to work with Shah Rukh any more because their amazing on-screen chemistry was making him uncomfortable.

Either way, Kajol did give up her career, and made a comeback only in 2007 with Fanaa. Since then she has only worked with her husband, but is now working with Shah Rukh once again in My Name is Khan.

The other superstar actress who gave up her career entirely was Madhuri Dixit.

Easily one of Bollywood's most loved and most popular actresses, Madhuri quit the industry as soon as she was pregnant.

Madhuri lived in near anonymity in Denver, USA for almost five years and then made a comeback with Aaja Nachle in 2007.

Actress Karishma Kapoor gave up her Bollywood career when she got married in 2003.

Karishma did make one film, Mere Jeevan Saathi in 2006, but the film bombed.

She is now looking to make a comeback into movies and is ready with one Bollywood and one Tamil flick.
